Hometown: Peoria, Illinois
Where did you go for undergrad and what did you major in?
I started my undergraduate education in Architecture at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, IL for two years. I eventually transferred and earned my Bachelors of Science in Architectural Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I also had Art History as a secondary major.
Why did you choose to attend DURP at UIUC?
Since my husband was working on earning his Masters of Architecture from UIUC, I actually already lived here in Champaign when I was accepted into the program. I had become heavily involved in several non-profit organizations and due to my commitment within these groups, I wanted to try to stay in the area. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that not only was there a program at UIUC, but that is was ranked third in the nation at the time. The strong presence of international students also was a major plus since I enjoy learning new cultures and making long-lasting friendships that spread across the world.
What are your career ambitions?
The future has so many possibilities with a Masters in Urban Planning! At this point in time, I know that I will be moving out to San Francisco after graduation and I hope to continue my Capstone work with implenting the cannabis industry throughout the country. There are a lot of areas that I have interest in experiencing, so over the course of my career, I hope that I will also have the opportunity to work with both large and small city planning departments, non-profits, and policy committees on various projects ranging from community development, economic development, historic preservation, disaster relief, sustainable and urban design, etc. My ultimate goal is to eventually establish a Design and Planning firm with my husband.
