Sampson Kwame Ansah

Sampson Kwame Ansah Master's Candidate

Hometown: Kumasi, Ghana

Where did you go for undergrad and what did you major in?

Undergrad College: Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. Majored in Human Settlement Planning

Why did you choose to attend DURP at UIUC?

After my undergrad education, I worked for a planning department in Ghana and was involved in landuse and transportation planning. I developed a keen interest in these two fields of urban planning because it had an intricate relationship. When I decided to go for graduate education, DURP at UIUC was the only school I saw that offered "land use and transportation" as a single specialization unlike most of the schools that had separate programs for the two fields. I had no other option than to enrol at DURP.

What are your career ambitions?

My aim is to make planning services more accessible to the majority of Ghanaians. Urban planners are at a premium in Ghana, and many people although needing the services of urban planners cannot find one. Coupled with a rapid rate of urbanization, there is a dire need for urban planners in the country. The few urban planners available charge high fees and this discourages the common folk from patronizing these services. My aim is to establish an urban planning consultancy that would provide services at a lower cost and would be patronized by the majority of Ghanaians.
