Mahmood Al-Wahaibi

Mahmood Al-Wahaibi Master's Candidate

Hometown: Muscat, Oman

Where did you go for undergrad and what did you major in?

I got my undergraduate degree at University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Double Major in Urban Studies and Geography of Urban Systems. Double Minors in Criminology and Criminal Deviance and GIS. Specialized degrees from Yonsei University in South Korea and St. Thomas University in St. Paul, MN.

Why did you choose to attend DURP at UIUC?

I chose the MUP program at UIUC because of its international reputation as one of the best in the US with great international exposure. My Academic Advisor and Urban Studies Director at University of Minnesota advised me to apply for this program as it would suit my interest of development issues in the Global South and accessibility of transportation services (logistics services) to stimulate local economies.

What are your career ambitions?

I have a dream to be in the UN or the World Bank to serve the disadvantaged and try to make internal changes in the way they stimulate development in less developed countries. Also, be one of the few planners in Oman who can possibly become Sheik of Al-Wahaibi tribe and lead community development from grassroots level.
