L. Deming Tilton

L. Deming Tilton, who graduated in Landscape Gardening in 1915, is the first graduate to go on to identify with the planning profession. He remained at the University of Illinois after graduation and used his considerable drawing skills to produce the History of the Growth and Development of the Campus of the University of Illinois. He worked at Harland Bartholomew and Associates (identified as Associate Planner in the 1923 Plan for Memphis), and later became Director of Planning in San Francisco and in Santa Barbara, California. Tilton joined the American City Planning Institute in 1923, and was active on committees nationally of the successor American Institute of Planners at least through the 1940s.
