Dr. Rolf Pendall came to the university in August, 2018, to be head of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. Prior to his tenure at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he was an Institute Fellow with the Urban Institute's Metropolitan Housing and Communities Policy Center in Washington, DC. He also served 12 years on the faculty of the Department of City and Regional Planning at Cornell University. Rolf holds a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from the University of California at Berkeley and an M.A. in Latin American Studies and an M.S. in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Texas at Austin. His teaching and research expertise includes metropolitan growth trends; land-use planning and regulation; federal, state, and local affordable housing and community development policy and programs; and racial residential segregation and the concentration of poverty.
