MUP 2017

What is your current job and how did your planning degree prepare you for it?

I am a Project Manager at WeWork who convenes designers, general contractors, and suppliers to deliver new WeWork locations throughout the West Coast. As a former transportation planner and startup consultant, I am interested in the design nexus between transportation, real estate and underused space to prompt new interactions between strangers.

The Master of Urban Planning (MUP) degree reinforced the planning principles and community engagement strategies needed to manage projects for Caltrans HQ, namely the first, statewide Big Data transportation contract within the State of California. The project management experience acquired at Caltrans HQ led to current project management experiences within the startup world.

Why did you choose to study urban planning?

I chose to study urban planning to build community within domestic and international markets. I chose to study urban planning at UIUC to learn to ask the right questions relating to development, community development, and social justice. The MUP program gave me a firm foundation and compass with which to navigate through my planning career.

What advice would you share with someone who is considering a career in urban planning?

Walk your neighborhood, get involved in community discussions and programming, and become a resource for your community! Staying involved will help you identify key issues you could address through your local, state or federal planning processes.
