More about Amy
What is your current job and how did your planning degree prepare you for it?
I work as a Planner I for the City & Borough of Juneau (Alaska). I focus on site development and other current planning issues, while also supporting more senior staff in long-range economic development and sustainability work. The undergraduate experiences that prepared me for my current job include project vetting for the Student Sustainability Committee and coursework concentrating on land use, environmental planning, and GIS. I often apply and build knowledge related to project administration, regulatory code interpretation, avalanche/landslide/flood/steep gradient-prone land development, and map literacy.
Why did you choose to study urban planning?
I am inspired by community development, and am drawn to the empirical and social strategies necessary for advancing the field.
What advice would you share with someone who is considering a career in urban planning?
Generally speaking, I think that one’s work should be driven by goals and results, not by one’s own ego.
