When & How to Apply

The Graduate College opens its on-line application system on September 15. To receive full consideration for admission and financial awards, completed applications must be received by December 15. In rare occasions we might consider late applicants with unique academic records or research experience.

We rarely admit students to start the Ph.D. program in the spring semester. The exceptions are students transferring programs within the University, usually after completing a related master's degree, or students who applied for fall enrollment but were delayed in starting due to unforeseeable circumstances.

Online Application: Apply through the Graduate College's online application system. Your resume, statement of purpose, letters of recommendations and transcripts should be uploaded to the system.

If you are a current UIUC graduate student or have attended UIUC as a graduate student in the past, please read our FAQs for information on how to apply.

Recommendations: Use the online application system to request recommendation letters from your references. They will be able to enter recommendations online. If there are any difficulties with the system, please ask your references to email (preferred) or mail their letters directly to Professor Faranak Miraftab, whose address is below.

Reporting Test Scores: All applicants must submit scores for the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing components of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test. Scores may be entered into the online application system. Please request official scores to be sent to institutional code 1836 (department codes are not used).

International Applicants: The Graduate College encourages International applicants to submit their applications 10 months prior to the intended date of entry. TOEFL or IELTS scores must be submitted into the online application system. Please request official scores be sent to institutional code 1836 (department codes are not used).

International applicants will find additional resources for navigating the admissions and enrollment process through the International Student and Scholar Services office. Applicants should be prepared to submit proof of financial resources into the online application system.

Transcripts: Transcripts from all secondary and post-graduate educational institutions should be uploaded directly to the online application system. English translations should also be uploaded if the credentials are not in English.

Additional Applications Requirements: Please also upload your Statement of Purpose, Statement of Personal History and your current Resume/CV directly into the online application system.
