How to Apply to the MUP Program

Applicants to the MUP program should submit an application through the Graduate College. Applicants who wish to receive priority consideration for departmental merit-based financial assistance should submit their application no later than December 15. All applicants who wish to be considered for admission to the MUP program should submit their application no later than January 15. After you submit your application, the department will review it for missing information and documentation and will notify you as soon as possible if any additional materials are needed.

Application Checklist

Application: Application materials should be submitted through the Graduate College Application for Admission along with the required application fee.

Resume: Your resume should be uploaded via the Graducate College application. 

Statement of Purpose: A statement of purpose of no more than 1,500 words should be uploaded via the Graduate College application.

Recommendations: Please use the online system to request recommendation letters from your references. References will be able to enter recommendations online. GRE Scores: All applicants must submit scores for the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing components of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test into the online application system. Please request official scores be sent to institutional code 1836 (department codes are not used).

Transcripts: Transcripts from all post-secondary educational institutions should be uploaded directly to the online application system. English translations should also be uploaded if the credientails are not in English.

Proof of Language Proficiency (Non-Native English Speakers): TOEFL or IELTS scores must be submitted into the online application system. Please request official scores be sent to institutional code 1836 (department codes are not used). For admission purposes, you may be exempt from the TOEFL requirement. However, please be aware that if you are interested in being considered for a teaching assistantship, you are encouraged to demonstrate oral English proficiency prior to arrival on campus.

Proof of Financial Resources (International Applicants): International applicants should submit proof of financial resources via the online application system.

Joint program applicants: If you wish to be considered for one of MUP's joint programs, please make sure to follow joint program instructions in the online application system and meet all requirements for the second program. For the MUP/MArch program, please submit portfolios to the Department of Architecture directly, rather than to DURP.

 

Important Admissions Dates

The MUP program is designed for full-time students to begin the program in the Fall semester of every year. Applications must be received by January 15 for consideration to begin the program in August of the same year. Important admission dates are as follows:

  • September 15: Graduate College application system opens.
  • December 15: Apply by this date for full consideration for admission and financial awards. Applicants who wish to be considered for a minority student fellowship from the Graduate College must have their applications in by this date. International applicants must also have their applications in by this date to be fully considered for financial support.
  • January 15: Apply by this date for full consideration for admission.
  • Early March: DURP begins notifying applicants of acceptance and financial award offers. These offers are made on an ongoing basis through mid- to late-April.
  • March 8-9: DURP Open House Weekend.
