“Forging community: resistance and renaissance in the barrio and beyond” —Transnational plan making
Abstract:
This presentation will concern the historical efforts of the Puerto Rican community in Humboldt Park in light of gentrification such as the establishment of Paseo Boricua, and current efforts such as the establishments of Puerto Rico Town. Moreover, the role of Chicago diaspora and their involvement in Puerto Rico will be highlighted in respect to their efforts in the island after Hurricanes Irma and Maria, especially in Loiza and Comerio, Chicago’s sister cities. A focal point of the presentation is to shed light on how colonized people seek to exercise self-determination.
