Ariam Torres Cordero (Ph.D. ’22) Receives ACSP Barclay Gibbs Jones Award
Ariam’s dissertation is entitled The Struggle for a Just Recovery: Insurgent Planning, Transnational Networks, and Colonial Legacies in Post-Disaster Puerto Rico. Ariam shared, “Receiving the 2023 Barclay Gibbs Jones Award is a profoundly humbling and gratifying validation of the tireless work and dedication that went into my dissertation. This award not only recognizes the importance of understanding and addressing the plural ways in which communities engage with planning—across both invited and invented spaces of action, often challenging conventional planning norms—but also accentuates the imperative of championing heightened advocacy for greater social, environmental, and climate justice within the field. My journey in researching these complex intersections has been fueled by a deep-rooted belief in the power of grassroots planning to drive positive change, and this award fuels my resolve to continue this vital work.”
Ariam is currently a Postdoctoral Research Scholar at Columbia World Projects, Columbia University. Committee members included Rolf Pendall, Rob Olshansky, Faranak Miraftab, and Deepak Lamba-Nieves.
