Who We Accept and What You Need
We accept students into the BAUSP program directly from high school (as first-year students) or from other colleges in their sophomore or junior year (as transfer students).
The following high school courses are required when applying as a first-year student:
- 4 years of English
- 3 years of mathematics
- 2 years of any one foreign language
- 2 years of social studies
- 2 years of laboratory science
A transfer student must have completed 60 or more semester hours (30 for students transferring within the university) of acceptable undergraduate work with an earned GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. The department recommends that students with more than 90 hours already earned (or 135 hours on a quarter system) complete their undergraduate degrees and apply to the graduate program.

Transfers from Other University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Majors
Students wishing to transfer to our program from another major within the university, or to add urban planning as a dual major are welcome to apply to the BAUSP program. This process is referred to as an Intercollegiate Transfer, or ICT. (Note that this terminology is used even when students are transferring between programs within the College of Fine and Applied Arts.)
The program considers ICT applications twice per year:
- Applications received between August 1 to October 1 are reviewed for admission for the following Spring semester.
- Applications received between December 1 and March 1 are reviewed for admission for the following Fall semester.
Applications received during an application cycle are reviewed following the close of that cycle. There is no admissions advantage to submitting your application early, although applicants are encouraged to not wait until the last minute for their own peace of mind. The department releases admissions decisions within four weeks of the close of each cycle.
Applicants are encouraged to meet with the department’s academic advisor, Ben LeRoy, prior to applying. Students can book an advising appointment using this link and can reach Ben at bleroy@illinois.edu.
To review application requirements and components, please review the BAUSP Transfer Student Application Form (PDF). Application materials can be sent to urbplan@illinois.edu.
